Machine learning engineering at a UAE-based AI company, from internship to part-time role
Labib AI is a UAE-based company building applied AI products, spanning smart assistant technology, edge AI deployments, and healthcare applications. I joined the team as a machine learning intern and have continued with them part-time as a Machine Learning Engineer alongside my research role at MBZUAI.
My main project there is a real-time surgical room understanding pipeline: it integrates speech recognition (Whisper-3), language understanding (Qwen-2.5), and pose estimation (HRNet) to monitor what is happening in the operating room, with the goal of reducing wrong-site surgeries. The system was demoed to healthcare professionals through a Django web application.
Beyond that, my work focuses on making models run efficiently on edge devices and on adapting AI systems to real deployment constraints, bridging the gap between research prototypes and products that operate reliably in the field.
